Health is fundamental to any person's life, and the health of our student body is an important issue at City College.

Many City College students are responsible for families, either as caregivers, economic providers, or both, and this has an impact on the City College community as a whole.  We need to find ways to broaden the reach of health care and health education at the College.

Currently, only full-time credit students have access to the Student Health Center on the Ocean Avenue Campus.  While that represents a significant number of people, it leaves out an even greater number of students, many of whom have no other access to health care.  As a community, we should commit to increasing the number of students that the College can serve, and seek opportunities where City College can play an even greater role in addressing the health care crisis.

As an institution of higher learning, the College should recognize how enormous an impact it could make through health education.  With over 100,000 students attending the College each year, clearly the College could create and deliver essential health screening opportunities and education programs that could benefit a large segment of San Franciscans.

With a large number of students studying health at the College, a vibrant graphic arts program, and an increasingly large segment of the students connected electronically, the College could play a leading role in identifying health issues and promoting good health.

Milton Marks has done much work already to make this happen. He has met with Mayor Newsom and Mitchell H. Katz, M.D., the city's Director Health, to discuss partnering with the City in the delivery of health care information and services. One successful outcome of the meeting was an educational event at the college to raise awareness of Hepatitis B, a disease that is particularly common among Asian Pacific Islanders.
