Milton Marks has long been a staunch advocate and leader for creating environmentally-friendly policies at City College of San Francisco.
He is the originator and author of the resolution directing City College to develop a Sustainability Plan and to create educational programs that encourage the City College community to follow sustainable living practices. To attain this goal, a committee of concerned administrators, faculty, staff, and students is nearing the end of a years-long process that will provide comprehensive environmental protocols for the college to follow.
Milton has likewise been a strong advocate for following green construction standards as CCSF develops new building facilities. He has emphasized transportation demand management, deconstruction vs. demolition, and materials’ reduction in new construction projects.
Under Milton’s leadership, the District has been working to ensure its construction projects meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Most of these projects supported by public funding are now aiming to be LEED Silver (the second of four ratings) or higher, and in some cases as high as LEED Platinum, the highest rating possible.
In working on the Sustainability Plan, Milton Marks has led City College to consider how its environmental policies affect students and the community. Thus, the Plan focuses not only on creating a green environment on campus, it also includes training students for green jobs, teaching people how to live sustainable lives, and making sustainability part of the curriculum and part of campus life. |
